Frances Jones Sprigg (1803-1880) and Horatio S Sprigg (1783-1847)

Upon entering the main hall, you will see two portraits to the immediate left - picturing Frances Senter Jones Sprigg and General Horatio Stephenson Sprigg. Frances, known as “Grandmuzzie” by her family, was married to General Horatio Stephenson Sprigg. They were parents to Clara Hope Sprigg Flower - whose granddaughter married Robert Layton IV. Frances lived at Evergreen - one of the few plantations not burned during the Civil War. Frances Sprigg (who was a relative of the owners of Flowerton, Evergreen and Inglewood Plantations) assisted with the convalescence of a Union Colonel Jones who had major battle injuries that occurred near Alexandria. He left a written note that the properties of the Sprigg/Flower families were not to be burned by Union troops.

Horatio joined the Navy, against his father’s wishes. He retired from the Navy in 1808 and settled in Rapides Parish at Evergreen Plantation and became a farmer. He was also elected to the State Legislature. Horatio came from West Virginia for the War of 1812, where he met Frances while visiting her family plantation.
